FOUNDATION

The Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency has long been known as one of the area’s most effective organizations, quietly serving the needs of the area’s low-income children and families. CAA operates 125 Head Start centers in 49 Hamilton County neighborhoods. Until 1998, federal regulation prohibited community action agencies from owning properties where clients obtained service. That regulation was repealed and the CAA Foundation was established in 1999 as a separate 501(c)3 corporation with its own governing board and staff enabling CAA to launch its first capital campaign in May 2002.

Now, CAA has completed two major construction projects in keeping with its long-range vision of providing outstanding service delivery in a safe, energy-efficient, one-stop environment for clients, employees and the public. These historic capital investments are strategically located in two Cincinnati neighborhoods.

The Theodore M. Berry Children and Family Head Start Learning Center was completed in 2003. The center, located in the West End of downtown Cincinnati, features state-of-the-art classrooms for preschoolers, toddlers and infants, surrounding a large indoor activity/play space – a “muscle room” the size of a football field. Inside, facilities for community meetings and job/skill training, staff development and food preparation are located on the first two floors, and a roof top pavilion is available for events and receptions.

The CAA Complex at Jordan Crossing, located at the corner of Reading and Langdon Farm roads in Bond Hill, was completed in 2005. The complex replaces the cramped and outmoded facilities once located in Walnut Hills, providing for 18 Head Start classrooms in the Life Learning Center and bringing all administrative offices under one roof. This facility is a highly accessible, one-stop destination for the Hamilton County families needing services.

These two projects have greatly improved the physical surroundings for the CAA clients, Head Start children, faculty, staff and volunteers, and have quickly become recognized as anchors in the communities for the children and families we serve.
